Jose Baez Biography

Jose Angel Baez is an American trial atrorney and author best known for being the lead attorney for Casey Anthony and Aaron Hernandez. He authored a book with Peter Golenbock about the case, Presumed Guilty, which became a New York Times Best Seller.

Baez has represented clients in the full range of criminal and civil cases. He flew to Aruba and helped free millionaire and businessman Gary Giordano from prison in 2011. Gary was a suspect in the disappearance of Robyn Gardner. Baez as named “Lawyer of the Year for 2011″ by LawyersUSA magazine and also named as one of the “Top 100 Trial Lawyers” for 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 by the National Trial Lawyers Association.

He is also well known for representing many victims of negligence and serious crimes. In 2012, he began representing multiple victims in the “Dark Knight” shooting tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. His practice has a particular emphasis on representing clients in complex and high-profile criminal and civil cases.

Many of his successes never make it into the spotlight as he has represented celebrities and athletes who prefer anonymity. Baez has worked on issues including shaken baby syndrome, pediatric head injuries, sexual assault cases with medical evidence, and cases involving DNA evidence.

He was born to Puerto Rican parents in Manhattan, N.Y. and raised by his mother in the Bronx, New York, and South Florida. He has three sisters.  He is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and is extremely active in various charitable endeavors in the Hispanic community.

Baez attended Homestead High School in Florida, but dropped out in the ninth grade.

He earned his General Equivalency Diploma (GED), and he joined the U.S. Navy in 1986. Baez spent three years assigned in connection with NATO at Norfolk, Virginia, trained as an intelligence analyst, and held a Top Secret security clearance according to his resume. He left the navy in 1989. He then attended Miami-Dade Community College, then transferred to Florida State University where he earned a BA.

Baez earned his Juris Doctor degree from St. Thomas University School of Law in 1997.

He was denied admission to the Florida Bar due to financial irresponsibility after graduating from law school in 1997. Baez worked as an intern at the Miami Dade Public Defender’s office and owned several companies unable to practice as an attorney. The Florida Board of Bar Examiners admitted Baez in 2005 after he had demonstrated that he had rehabilitated himself.

After Baez was granted his license, he focused primarily on criminal defense cases, including the case of Elvira Garcia, an undocumented Mexican immigrant accused of kidnapping a child that she had adopted as her own.

Elvira’s charges were dropped, This turned out to be a more of a civil custody matter. He tried the first degree murder case of Nilton Diaz, heavily covered by the media in Orlando and Puerto Rico because the victim was the 2-year-old granddaughter of World Boxing Champion Wilfredo Vazquez. He was also acquitted of first and second degree murder but convicted of manslaughter and child abuse.

Jose Baez Casey Anthony

He came to significant national attention when he took on the case of Casey Anthony. It was dubbed “the Social Media Trial of the Century” by Time Magazine. Casey was acquitted of the murder of her daughter, Caylee, after a trial that lasted six weeks.

In a press conference on the verdict day, Baez said, “While we’re happy for Casey, there are no winners in this case. Caylee has passed on far, far too soon, and what my driving force has been for the last three years has been always to make sure that there has been justice for Caylee and Casey because Casey did not murder Caylee. It’s that simple. He went on, “And today our system of justice has not dishonored her memory by a false conviction.”

He was featured on every major news network and show across the country. He authored a book with Peter Golenbock about the Anthony Case, Presumed Guilty, which was published on July 3, 2012 and also became a New York Times Best Seller. Fox News Channel reporter Geraldo Rivera referred to Baez as “Juanie Cochran.”
