Anne was born the only child of a German Jewish banker, Fritz Mannheimer, and his Roman Catholic wife, Marie Antoinette Jeanne Reiss. His father died in 1939 before Anne’s death while her mother died in 2004.

Her German-born maternal grandfather, Hugo Reiss, was a prominent German Jewish businessman in Shanghai, China, where he then served as the Brazilian consul. Her maternal grandmother, Ignatia Mary Valerie Murphy, was a Roman Catholic of Irish descent from San Francisco, California.

After her mother moved to the United States and remarried, Annette was adopted by her stepfather, Charles W. Engelhard Jr., an industrial magnate.

Marriages

Annette was married twice in her lifetime. Her first marriage was to banker and diplomat Samuel Pryor Reed Jr. in 1956. They had three children together before their divorce in 1971.

Annette then married fashion designer Oscar de la Renta in 1989. They remained married until his death in 2014. Annette actively played a role in her husband’s fashion empire and actively participated in many philanthropic endeavors.

Philanthropy

Renta was a prominent philanthropist who dedicated her life to supporting a variety of causes. She was the wife of Oscar de la Renta, the famous fashion designer, and together they established the ODLR Foundation to support a range of initiatives.

Was particularly Renta interested in supporting educational and cultural institutions. She was a member of the board of directors of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Ballet, and she also served on the boards of the Spanish Institute and the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute.

Death
