Barbara Starr is an American television news journalist for CNN. She is the network’s Pentagon correspondent, based in Washington, DC.
Starr attended California State University from which she earned a degree in journalism. From 1979 to 1988, she was a correspondent for Business Week magazine, covering energy matters.
Starr then worked for the news magazine Jane’s Defense Weekly from 1988 to 1997. Covering national security and defense policy before joining ABC News as a producer, covering the Pentagon.
Previously, she was the Washington, D.C., bureau chief for Jane’s Defence Weekly. A London-based weekly newsmagazine. Where for nine years she covered all aspects of national security. The intelligence community, defense and military policy for nine years.
During this time, Starr conducted numerous one-on-one interviews with current secretaries of defense and directors of central intelligence. Starr has also traveled to the Balkans, the Persian Gulf and NATO headquarters in Brussels.

She was the only broadcast journalist to travel to Iraq and Syria with commanding general of U.S. Central Command in 2016, Gen. Joseph Votel, the highest-ranking U.S. military official to travel into Syria during the war, to report on the global fight and special operations training of local forces to combat ISIS.
In her career, she has profiled numerous wounded troops and the plight of homeless veterans. She has reported on the fallen regularly from Section 60 at Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
MSNBC reporter Chris Hayes ran a segment in June 2013 in which he argued that Starr’s publication of leaked information was at least as potentially harmful to national security as those published by Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian.
He received criticism from Kenyans through a Twitter hashtag that trended for several hours on the Internet when she called Kenya a “terror hotbed” as President Obama headed to the East African nation in July 2015. Starr was referring to the security threat posed by Al-Shabaab militants operating from neighboring Somalia.
