David Goggins is an American ultra marathon runner, motivational speaker, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete, and author. He is a retired Navy Seal, and is also the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks).

David originally applied to join the United States Air Force Pararescue. He failed his ASVAB twice before succeeding and entering into ‘The Pipeline’ (Pararescue training).

He later became a member of the United States Air Force Tactical Air Control Party also known as TACP. He then served his time in TACP and left the United States Air Force.

David succeeded in graduating from BUD/S training with Class 235 in 2001 and was assigned to SEAL Team FIVE after three attempts. The award-winning athlete served in Iraq. He graduated from Army Ranger School with the distinction of enlisted “Top Honor Man” in 2004.

David went on the Today Show to attempt to beat the world record for the most pull-ups done in 24 hours on September 27, 2012.

His main aim of the challenge was to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. He had completed 2011 pullups (halfway to the record) after 6 hours and 30 minutes in.

By 9:15 pm, after 13.5 hours, he completed pull-up 2588 and had been in a considerable pain for hours as a severe bulge burst through the skin of his right wrist.

An x-ray he had at 10:30pm confirmed a right extensor policies complex partial tear. The reason for the injury and also the failure in the attempt is thought to be the use of a portable pull-up bar that was not bolted down, as opposed to the sturdier equipment he used during the months of training prior to this event.

He raised more than $20,000 for his chosen charity despite not beating the record. Goggins completed 3,207 pull-ups in 12 hours on November 27, 2012, but had to stop then due to an injury in his left palm.

He broke the world record for the most pull-ups done in 24 hours on January 19, 2013 in Brentwood, Tennessee. He then completed 4,030 pull-ups in 17 hours, setting a new record. This was his third attempt at breaking the record.

During a routine medical checkup in May 2010, Goggins’s doctor discovered a birth defect known as atrial septal defect (ASD), this is a hole between atrial chambers of his heart. The heart is only able to function at about 75 percent capacity.

The Congenital heart defect typically prevents one from doing activities such as scuba diving or anything at high altitude. A few days after learning of the condition, he had a surgery to repair his heart.

Goggins has said that he takes a tiny diet, high in Protein around 40%, very high in fat also around 40% and very low carbohydrate around 15% to 20% of his diet.

Goggins says that after several SEALs he knew died in Afghanistan, he wanted to raise money so that their kids could someday attend college, and finding people to sponsor him to run Bad water popped into my head.

At that time, he weighed 280 pounds. He managed to run 100 miles in a qualifying race the next week but gave himself stress fractures and shin splints. He also broke all the small bones in my feet because his feet was not prepared to deal with that much pressure.

He needed to slim down incase he wanted to keep running. He started limiting himself to 1,500 calories a day which were mostly protein from eggs, chicken, and tuna. He also began running more often.

For every to pounds he lost, he took took 45 pounds of pressure off his knees. Eight months later, when he ran Kiehl’s Bad water Ultra marathon, Goggins weighed 177 pounds. He finished fifth and raised $20,000 for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
