“It’s a gratifying experience to work in a job you love, in a town you love, surrounded by people and scenery you love. Wow!” Jackie says.
Although she’s lived in Alaska for much of her life, Jackie had the opportunity to travel all over the world, thanks to a mother who believed travel was one the best educations one could have — plus the fact that she has relatives in Europe and Indonesia — and her father worked in the Middle East for a time.
Doing the weather on Channel 2 News keeps Jackie on her toes since Alaska presents some of the most challenging weather situations in the world. It’s definitely not the same old thing every day.

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) – An Anchorage Police officer’s dashcam caught an unusual scene during a traffic stop. It was posted on the department’s Facebook page Wednesday. Officers Parry and Grant made the traffic stop on the Glenn Highway. This traffic stop was normal, until the point where a nosy little beaver walks into the scene, seemingly to get a better view of the action. The beaver played it safe and scurried back where he waddled out from. The supermoon made an appearance early Tuesday morning in the western skies in Anchorage. And it was clear enough for night owls and early risers in some parts of the state to get a glimpse of the “snow moon” as it’s also called.
The sound of little wings buzzing through the air in the search for pollen — that’s what Barbara Bachmeier hears when she is out amongst her hives. And she was successful in keeping her hive alive all winter long. “Many people assert that honey bees cannot be overwintered in Alaska and/or other cold climates. My colonies have overwintered successfully and are returning to their hives with pollen,“ Bachmeier wrote to Channel 2.
Her bees are already finding flowering plants, enough to come back with for the baby bees, she says. “These honey bees are out of over-winter torpor and are flying around in search of fresh pollen. You can see that they have discovered flowers in bloom in east Anchorage already! The pollen will be fed to the larvae in order to (ensure) an adequate number of worker bees and the continued success of the colony,” she wrote.
Representatives of the Fox Valley YMCA went before the Yorkville City Council on Tuesday night disputing a piece of pending litigation with the city. Following the recession, The Fox Valley YMCA purchased 27 acres of property at Cannonball Trl. and Galena Rd. looking to expand into a new facility. They are currently located on Eldamain Rd. in Plano. Treasurer and Director of the Fox Valley YMCA Larry Nelson spoke to the city council in open session Tuesday. Nelson is also the founder and CEO of WSPY.
The YMCA is a non-profit. Nelson indicated that the Y recently thought that a settlement was in place but that a copy was received back from the city with several changes. Yorkville Mayor John Purcell asked about some of the changes at issue. Nelson said one of those issues revolves around building code and code inspection. Mayor Purcell is the YMCA board secretary. He told WSPY his role is not as a voting member with the city on this matter. Yorkville aldermen who spoke essentially argued that the property should be kept within the city. This was alderman Joel Frieders.
Nelson indicated that the Y had first attempted to speak with the city before going to litigation. Alderwoman Jackie Milschewski spoke about concerns over the future of the property and the parties had this exchange. It was a beautiful evening on the waters of Icy Strait, and a pod of orcas surfaces seemingly information. James Jack of Hoonah took this video. You can hear the sound of them exhaling as they go on their way. Southeast Alaska is enjoying the effects of high pressure, sunny and calm out there on the water. James Jack says it was great to see the orca whales, but the fishing for the humans wasn’t so great…and he figures this pod had a lot to do with that situation.
