Jeff Davis was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in the nearby suburb of Vestavia Hills. He attended Vestavia Hills High School and graduated in 1981. After high school, Davis attended Auburn University in Alabama, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1985.

During his time at Auburn, Davis was involved in the student newspaper. The Auburn Plainsman, and served as editor-in-chief during his senior year. He also interned at several newspapers, including The Birmingham News and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

After graduating from Auburn, Davis began his journalism career as a reporter for The Tuscaloosa News in Alabama. He later worked for The Tampa Tribune in Florida and The Anniston Star in Alabama before eventually becoming a freelance writer and author.
