Kevin McCarthy graduated from California State University, Bakersfield, worked as a political consultant, and was elected to the California State Assembly in 2002. He served in the Assembly for six years and was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2007.
McCarthy rose quickly through the ranks of the Republican Party. Kevin McCarthy was elected House majority leader in 2014 and speaker of the House in 2019. He is the first Californian to serve as speaker since Dennis Hastert in 2007.
