Mariel Hemingway Biography
Mariel Hemingway is an American actress and author, born on November 22, 1961, in Mill Valley, California, United States. She is the granddaughter of the famous writer Ernest Hemingway and the daughter of Jack Hemingway, a writer and fly fisherman.
Mariel began acting at age 14 with a Golden Globe–nominated breakout role in Lipstick (1976), and received Academy and BAFTA Award nominations for her performance in Woody Allen’s Manhattan (1979).
Mariel is known for her leading roles in Personal Best (1982) and also Star 80 (1983). She is also known for playing in the TV series Civil Wars, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.
Her career dwindled in the 1990s amid mental health struggles. Hemingways has also starred in and co-produced videos about yoga, and holistic living.

Mariel Hemingway Family
Hemingway was born the the third daughter of Byra Louise (née Whitley) Hemingway (1922–1988) and Jack Hemingway (1923–2000), a writer. She has two sisters, Joan Hemingway (born 1950) and Margaux Hemingway (1954).
Mariel’s paternal grandparents were Hadley Richardson (1891–1979) and Nobel Prize–laureate novelist Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961). Ernest committed suicide four months before Mariel was born.
Hemingway was named for the Cuban port of Mariel, her father and grandfather visited the village regularly to go fishing. She grew up primarily in Ketchum, Idaho where her father lived. It is also where Ernest had spent time as a sportsman and writer before he committed suicide.

Hemingways married Stephen Crisman and later separated in 2008, divorcing the following year. Mariel was romantically linked with former stuntman Bobby Williams as of early 2011 with whom she has co-authored a self-help book. Bobby was described as Mariel’s partner in April 2015. Hemingway also practices Transcendental Meditation.

Mariel Hemingway Career
Hemingway started her acting career in the late 1970s with a small role in the film “Lipstick”. She gained critical acclaim for her role in Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” (1979), which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She continued to work in films such as “Personal Best” (1982), “Star 80” (1983), and “The Mean Season” (1985).
In addition to her acting career, Hemingway is an advocate for mental health and wellness. She has written several books on the subject, including “Finding My Balance” (2003), “Healthy Living from the Inside Out” (2007), and “Mariel Hemingway’s Healthy Living from the Inside Out: Every Woman’s Guide to Real Beauty, Renewed Energy, and a Radiant Life” (2010).

In the film, Hemingway played Tracy, a high school student who becomes involved in a romantic relationship with Allen’s character, a middle-aged writer named Isaac.
“Manhattan” is considered one of Allen’s greatest films and is known for its beautiful cinematography, its love letter to New York City, and its exploration of love and relationships. Hemingway’s performance in the film was praised by critics and earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Since “Manhattan,” Hemingway has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including “Star 80,” “Civil Wars,” and “Lipstick Jungle.” She has also written several books, including a memoir titled “Finding My Balance” and a health and wellness guide called “Mariel Hemingway’s Healthy Living from the Inside Out.”
Mariel Hemingway Star 80
Hemingway starred as Dorothy Stratten in Star 80 (1983). It is a film about the Playboy model’s life and murder.
Reports then circulated for years that Hemingway had had her breasts enlarged to play the role of Stratten. During a 2007 appearance on the late-night talk and variety show, Fashionably Late with Stacy London, Mariel said she had had the surgery before Star 80. Her breast implants were then removed years later after they had ruptured.
Hemingway was also featured in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) as Lacy Warfield. Finally, she released additional footage showed an expansion of her role. Mariel also co-starred in the 1991–93 ABC series Civil Wars.
She was also cast as the female lead in Darren Star’s CBS drama Central Park West for the 1995-96 season. The show however fared poorly with both critics and viewers. After 13 episodes Hemingway was told that the show wanted her to accept a huge pay cut and demotion to a recurring character status.
Mariel is currently the host of Spiritual Cinema, a monthly television show dedicated to spiritual films. Hemingway has also begun hosting a series of yoga practice videos Yoga Now, with guru Rodney Yee.
Mariel worked on the documentary film Running from Crazy, directed by Barbara Kopple and then produced by the Oprah Winfrey Network chronicling the Hemingway family’s history of suicide, substance abuse and also mental illness, which is shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013.
She received a humanitarian award from the San Diego Film Festival for her role in the documentary in October 2013.

Mariel Hemingway Health
Hemingway talked of her bouts with mental illness and her still lingering issues with her siblings in a 2013 television documentary film, Running from Crazy. Mariel also talked of her family’s struggles with alcoholism, mental illnesses and suicide.
