He then retired from service as commander of the U.S. Army from March 25, 2011 to November 4, 2012. European Army and 7th Army. Decommissioned in December 2012.

Hartling attended Christian Brothers College High School in Clayton, Missouri, graduating in 1971. He was elected in his 2010 and is also a member of the CBC Alumni Hall of Fame. After graduating from the Military Academy at West Point, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Armored Division in 1975. While at West Point, he was a member of the NCAA Division I swim and water polo teams, was active on the class committee, and earned the rank of cadet captain during his senior year.
Mark received his Master of Science in Physical Education from Indiana University.

He then earned a master’s degree in Military Arts and Sciences from the Command and Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College in Washington, D.C.

In 2016, Hertling was accepted to the Doctor of Business Administration degree program at Rollins University Kramer His Business School.

During his time in the U.S. Army, Mark worked in ordnance, cavalry, planning, operations, and training. He commanded all organizations from platoons to field armies. Most notably, Mr. Hertling commanded the US Army’s 1st Armored Division and the Northern Task Force Iron/Multinational Division in Iraq during the 2007-2008 build-up.

In 2013, he became senior vice president of the Florida Hospital Organization in Orlando. While there, he developed a successful medical leadership development course for the organization. In 2016, he published a book called Growing Physician Leaders.

Hartling was named one of his 25 members of the Presidential Council on Fitness, Exercise and Nutrition by US President Barack Obama in September 2013. He then served as a city councilor until January 20, 2017.

Mark is also a Senior Advisor to Mission Readiness, a non-profit, non-partisan organization of veteran leaders advocating for smart investments in America’s children.

He then served on the board of World TEAM (The Exceptional Athlete Matters) Sport. An organization that provides opportunities for disabled athletes.

He also serves as an advisor to Operation Gratitude, an organization that supports military personnel and their families. In 2016, Hertling was appointed an Adjunct Scholar to the Institute for Modern Warfare at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
