In the spring of 1970, before he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the third round of the NFL draft as the fifty-third overall pick.

Mel`s Playing career

Mel was the prototype cornerback of his era and a significant reason why the Pittsburgh Steelers were the dominant team of the National Football League in the 1970s. A third-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1970, he had the size, speed, and quickness for the position, plus the toughness and mental ability to adjust his coverage tactics and excel despite rule changes that favored receivers.

Blount eager to reminisce about the rivalry

Mel Blount It was easy for Mel Blount to pinpoint when the Cleveland Browns-Pittsburgh Steelers rivalry became personal to him. It was around the same time many people around the country realized its significance.

Mel Blount, a Hall of Fame corner for the Steelers during their dynasty in the 1970s, will be able to talk about that game and many more when he visits Warren later this month.

Mel is part of the fourth annual Warren Legends celebration dinner and golf outing on Aug. 17-18 at Trumbull Country Club. Blount will be joined by fellow Steeler Franco Harris and Browns legends Paul Warfield and Greg Pruitt in The Rivalry when all four former players will talk about what they remember from those games.

Mel Blount said he’s anticipating the rivalry returning to the days when it was a back-and-forth battle. The Steelers have owned Cleveland since the turn of the century (the Browns returned as an expansion team in 1999), with a 33-5-1 record since 2000. But Blount expects a young Cleveland team to return to relevancy with quarterback Baker Mayfield’s emergence and a strong core surrounding him.

Blount was a model of consistency for the city of Pittsburgh during his playing days. Blount said the two went head-to-head on a couple of occasions, with Warfield getting the best of Blount in their first meeting when Warfield was with the Miami Dolphins.

Tim Benz: Steelers tempt fate, escape unscathed in Tennessee

The Pittsburgh Steelers played Russian roulette with their veteran starters and won.

For the most part. Let’s see how bad safety Sean Davis’ ankle injury is. And linebacker Bud Dupree’s thumb. At least Mike Tomlin didn’t give a dire diagnosis about either player after the Steelers beat the Tennessee Titans 18-6 in a preseason game Sunday night.

Teams such as the Houston Texans (running back Lamar Miller, ACL) and the New York Jets (linebacker Avery Williamson, ACL) haven’t been as lucky.

Ben Roethlisberger and most of the Steelers offensive regulars absorbed three series, scoring a touchdown on the third try.
