Vernon was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. And he played for the Dolphins from 2012 to 2015. During his time with the Dolphins, he recorded 29 sacks, 111 tackles, and one interception.

In 2016, he signed with the New York Giants as a free agent. And he played for the Giants for two seasons. During his time with the Giants, he recorded 15 sacks, 94 tackles, and one interception.

In 2018, Vernon was traded to the Cleveland Browns, where he played for two seasons. During his time with the Browns, he recorded 10 sacks, 67 tackles, and one interception. He was released by the Browns in March 2020 and signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals. However, he was released by the Cardinals in August 2020. And did not play in the NFL during the 2020 season.
