Ray Lucas Biography
Ray Lucas is a studio-based NFL analyst for SportsNet New York and a former American football quarterback in the National Football League. He also contributes to the network’s website, www.sny.tv.
Lucas played for three teams: the New England Patriots, the New York Jets, and the Miami Dolphins, during his seven-year career from 1996 to 2002.
He was named to the Hudson County Sports Hall of Fame on March 28, 2008. In March 2018, he was named Executive Director of the Harrison New Jersey Housing Authority, serving in the same capacity that his father did for 27 years.

Ray’s father served in Vietnam when his mother got pregnant with another man. This resulted in Lucas being born out of wedlock. However, Tom later married Ray’s mother, and he raised him as his own.

Ray Lucas NFL
Lucas spent several years as a quarterback in the NFL, playing for the Jets, Patriots, Dolphins, and Ravens. He is known for his athleticism and versatility; he not only played QB but also WR and special teams. He initially signed with New England as a free agent in 1996 after going undrafted out of Rutgers University, where he played for three seasons, from 1992–95.
After quarterback Vinny Testaverde was injured in the first game of the 1999 NFL season, Rick Mirer took over and went ahead, winning four of ten games.
Ray later took over, losing his first two starts but later winning his next four games to give the Jets an 8–8 record for the season.
He was a favorite player of Bill Parcells during Parcells’ time in New England and with the Jets. Lucas was one of the players Parcells eventually brought over from the Patriots to the Jets. In 1997, Parcells introduced him at quarterback, with second-string QB Neil O’Donnell lined up at wide receiver. He set up in a shotgun formation and then ran the ball himself for 15 yards, befuddling the Vikings defense in a play that eventually led to a Jets victory.
Ray attempted his first NFL pass in Week 17 of 1997 against the Detroit Lions. He then went 3 of 3 for 28 yards before throwing an interception.
Ray Lucas Dolphins
Lucas spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons with the Miami Dolphins after his success with the Jets. Ray did not see much playing time during the 2001 season as the team’s backup quarterback. In the 2002 season, he got an opportunity to start six games. Lucas was also the quarterback of choice during goal-line and some red-zone situations due to his large size.
He holds the unenviable distinction of having the worst single-game quarterback performance by any Dolphin. In one game against the Buffalo Bills on October 20, 2002, he was responsible for 6 turnovers: 4 interceptions and 2 fumbles. Lucas completed only 13 passes to Dolphin receivers.

He joined SportsNet New York in 2006, and he serves as the network’s studio-based NFL analyst. He appears on a number of SNY’s exclusive Jets shows, including “Jets Pre-Game Live,” “Jets Post-Game Live,” “Jets Extra Point,” “Jets Nation,” and also SNY’s Jets Draft show. He also contributes to the network’s website, www.sny.tv, as well as SNY’s news shows, “Daily News Live” and “SportsNite.” He won an Emmy Award for Best “Sports Analyst” in 2010.
Ray Lucas Salary
Ray had a three-year deal with the Dolphins that stated that he would receive a base salary of $700,000 the first year, $500,000 the second year, and $750,000 the third year.
His salary after leaving the field and as an analyst has not yet been revealed.
