Reid was a freshman with the Blackhawks during the NHL’s development period of 1967-68. Stan Mikita was a Chicago legend. Right off the bat in Reid’s time with the Blackhawks, Mikita was testing Reid on the size of the agreement. The youthful blue-liner had the option to press from General Manager Tommy Ivan.

Reid’s reaction was: “I can’t let you know, Stan. Mr. Ivan asked me not to uncover it to anybody. He doesn’t need it to get around the storage space and upset some folks.”

Mikita squeezed and Reid at last admitted Ivan had granted him with the royal entirety of $10,000.

Reid is not known as a goal scorer. Otherwise, Reid is best-known for accomplishment as a player. He is best known for scoring a rare penalty shot goal on October 14, 1971, against Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadians. It was the only penalty shot ever scored against Dryden. Additionally, it was one of only 17 goals that Reid scored in his career.

Reid stood as a North Star mainstay until the 1977-1978 season. It was at that time that a small red rash appeared on his arm. Massive itching sensations soon followed as his skin began to deteriorate. His affliction soon took on the name “Gunk.”

As the league’s doctors, trainers, and equipment producers began to investigate, they discovered that about 100 players across the NHL were suffering from various degrees of the affliction. But no case was as severe as Reid’s.

His skin got so bad that he could only sleep while sitting upright in a wooden chair. Before the season was over, his suffering grew so severe. Due to this, he was forced to retire. In the end, the doctors concluded that he was allergic to his equipment and to the die found in his uniform.

He’s excited about this Wild team, because of both the roster and new coach Bruce Boudreau, and also because it is supposed to be this way on Opening Night.

After retiring as a player, Reid spent 12 years as a color analyst for the North Stars. After the team’s move to Dallas, Reid continued as an analyst for NCAA hockey. He and Bob Kurtz have been part of the radio broadcast team for the Minnesota Wild since the team’s inaugural season in 2000.
