In 2005, Ohanian co-founded Reddit with Steve Huffman , a social news website that allows users to submit and vote on content. The site quickly became popular, and was acquired by Condé Nast in 2006. Ohanian continued to work at Reddit until 2010, when he left to pursue other ventures.
After leaving Reddit, Ohanian co-founded several other startups, including Hipmunk, a travel search website, and Breadpig, a crowd funding platform for creative projects. He also worked as an investor, and was a partner at the venture capital firm Y Combinator.
In 2015, Ohanian returned to Reddit as executive chairman, and helped the site become profitable for the first time in its history. He resigned from the company’s board in 2020, and urged the board to replace him with a Black candidate in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Ohanian is also an advocate for net neutrality and open internet, and has been a vocal supporter of immigration reform. He has written a book called “Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed,” which discusses the power of the internet to enable entrepreneurship and innovation.
