Melanie Martinez is an American singer-songwriter, actress, and director. She rose to prominence after appearing on the American television vocal talent show The Voice in 2012. As a result of the show, she released her debut single titled “Dollhouse”.

In 2012, Martinez auditioned for the third season of The Voice. She had not watched the show herself prior to the audition. The initial, untelevised audition was an open call, held at Javits Center. She recalls that while she and her mother were driving to the audition, her mother’s car broke down and the two were forced to “hitchhike” a taxicab I to get there.
Several months after the initial audition, Martinez received word that she had advanced to the “second round”. She then received multiple callbacks until she was finally selected to audition on the show itself.

Produced by Michael Keenan with the exception of one song produced by kinetics & one love (who previously collaborated with Martinez on such hits as “dollhouse” and “carousel”), she cycled through sounds and kept whatever ideas inspired her: orchestral flourishes, sinewy beats, lush organ, an antique waltz.
As with cry baby, the result is that k-12’s music is a vibrant and singular melting pot of low-key hip-hop, soulful pop, and indie-leaning electro.
