Melanie Martinez Family

She was born to parents of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent. Her mother’s name is Murcy Martinez, and her father’s name is Jose Martinez. She has two brothers, one of whom is named Joseph Martinez. Not much information is publicly available about her extended family.

At her young age, she practiced photography and painting. Martinez claims to have been referred to as a “cry baby” by others due to her emotionality as a child. This sparked the creation of the titular character of her debut album, Cry Baby.

Growing up in a “traditional Latin household” she was made to feel shameful about talking about sexuality and felt as if she would not be accepted if she came out. Martinez claims that her family is now fully coming to terms with her being bisexual.

Melanie Martinez The Voice

In 2012, Martinez auditioned for the third season of The Voice. She had not watched the show herself prior to the audition. The initial, untelevised audition was an open call, held at Javits Center. She recalls that while she and her mother were driving to the audition, her mother’s car broke down and the two were forced to “hitchhike” a taxicab I to get there.

Several months after the initial audition, Martinez received word that she had advanced to the “second round”. She then received multiple callbacks until she was finally selected to audition on the show itself.

K-12 is Melanie’s second studio album. It is also her first studio album in four years and was released with an accompanying film of the same name on September 6, 2019, under Atlantic Records.

Produced by Michael Keenan with the exception of one song produced by kinetics & one love (who previously collaborated with Martinez on such hits as “dollhouse” and “carousel”), she cycled through sounds and kept whatever ideas inspired her: orchestral flourishes, sinewy beats, lush organ, an antique waltz.

As with cry baby, the result is that k-12’s music is a vibrant and singular melting pot of low-key hip-hop, soulful pop, and indie-leaning electro.
