Sam Mikulak Biography

Sam Mikulak is an American gymnast who was born on October 13, 1992, in Corona del Mar, California. He began his gymnastics career at the age of 2 and competed in his first Junior Olympic Nationals at the age of 12.

Mikulak is known for his impressive performances on the pommel horse, high bar, and floor exercise. He has won numerous national and international titles throughout his career, including six U.S. all-around titles (2013-2016, 2018, 2021) and three NCAA all-around titles (2011, 2013, 2014).

Mikulak was born to Stephen Mikulak an orthopedic surgeon and Tina Mikulak. Both his parents competed in gymnastics at the University of California, Berkeley, and started Sam in gymnastics at age two. Sam also has a younger sister Alexandra Mikulak, who started gymnastics at two as well but stopped at a young age.

Sam was a member of the Junior National team from 2007 to 2010. Mikulak won the all-around title as well as the floor exercise and vault titles at the 2010 Junior Olympic Nationals.

He attended the University of Michigan where he competed on their gymnastics team and graduated with a degree in psychology in 2016.

Sam Mikulak College Career

During his college career, Mikulak won seven NCAA championships, including four consecutive all-around titles from 2011 to 2014. He was also a 16-time All-American and won numerous individual event titles.

Mikulak had a standout freshman season in 2010, winning the NCAA floor exercise title and finishing second in the all-around competition. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and helped lead Michigan to a third-place team finish at the NCAA Championships.

In 2011, Mikulak won his first NCAA all-around title and also captured the parallel bars and high bar titles. He repeated as all-around champion in 2012 and 2013, becoming just the third gymnast in NCAA history to win three consecutive titles. Mikulak also won the pommel horse and parallel bars titles in 2012, and the parallel bars and high bar titles in 2013.

Mikulak’s college career was cut short by injuries, and he turned professional in 2013 to focus on preparing for the 2016 Olympics. He went on to compete in the 2016 and 2021 Olympics, as well as numerous World Championships and other international competitions.

Throughout his career, Mikulak has won numerous medals in international competition, including gold medals in the all-around and team competitions at the Pan American Games and the Pacific Rim Championships.

At the 2019 American Cup, an FIG All-Around World Cup event, he placed second in the all-around. He was just 0.001 of a point behind fellow American and the event’s two-time defending champion Yul Moldauer.

He competed at the 2019 FIG All-Around World Cup in Tokyo, Japan in April. Mikulak went on to win the all-around gold medal with a score of 86.599 ahead of the defending gold and silver medalists from Japan— Kenzō Shirai. Shirai won the bronze medal while still recovering from injury, and Wataru Tanigawa (85.665), who successfully defended his silver medal.

Sam competed at the 2019 U.S. National Championships in August. Mikulak went ahead to win his record-breaking sixth all-around title, as well as gold medals on floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars, and high bar. Mikulak’s margin of victory in the all-around was the largest of any of his national titles.
