Taylor Hackford is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for directing several critically acclaimed films, including “An Officer and a Gentleman,” “Ray,” and “The Devil’s Advocate.”
He attended he University of Southern California from where he graduated in 1968. There, he was a pre-law major focusing on international relations and economics.
Hackford served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bolivia, where he started using Super 8 film in his spare time after graduation. His camera was purchased for him by fellow Peace Corps volunteer, Steve Ball.
Hackford decided that he did not want to pursue a career in law, and instead got a mailroom position at KCET-TV. In 1970, he was the associate producer on the Leon Russell special “Homewood” at KCET.
