Kyan Douglas Biography

Kyan Douglas is an American television personality and stylist born on May 5, 1970, in Miami, Florida. He is known for being the grooming expert on the American television program Queer Eye from 2003 to 2007. He was raised in Tampa and Tallahassee.

After high school, he moved to Dallas, where he studied philosophy at Brookhaven College. He then first became interested in religion and the healing arts. Kyan moved to Austin, where he had initially planned to pursue his interest in acting.

This was by studying drama at the University of Texas at Austin, though he was interdicted by his maximal shyness. He moved to New Orleans in his mid-twenties, where he obtained a degree in TV production and theater studies at Loyola University.

In 1996, three of his close friends were murdered in a restaurant robbery where they all worked. This encouraged him to leave New Orleans.

In 1999, he moved to New York City and started working in sales for Aveda. He then helped them set up the Aveda Institute, a hairstyling and grooming school. He then enrolled in its cosmetology program. After graduating at the top of his class, he joined the New York hair salon Arrojo Studio as a colorist.

Kyan has been among the show’s original cast members since its premiere in July 2003. Originally Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the title of the series was later shortened to Queer Eye to broaden the overall scope.

Each episode of the series features a team of gay professionals in the fields of fashion, personal grooming, interior design, entertaining, and culture collectively known as the “Fab Five” performing a makeover (in the parlance of the show, a “make-better”), usually for a heterosexual (straight) man: revamping wardrobe, redecorating, and offering advice on grooming, lifestyle, and food.

Kyan starred alongside Ted Allen, Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley, and Jai Rodriguez. Queer Eye was revived with a new Fab Five in 2018 when a Netflix reboot released its first season to positive reviews. The 2018 series features Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Bobby Berk, Tan France, and Karamo Brown.

As part of Queer Eye’s “Fab Five,” Kyan has co-authored a book and also appeared on a soundtrack CD and accompanying DVD based on the show. He has also appeared on many magazine covers and TV talk shows.

He published Beautified, his own book on grooming for women, and became a spokesman and product advisor for L’Oreal in 2004. In the same year, he was also invited back to speak at his previous school, Loyola University in New Orleans.

He then moved from New York to Los Angeles, California, in 2007. He told the now-inoperative TV show Out in Dallas that he had wished to pursue acting and was taking acting classes. Kyan told Sirius satellite radio channel Out Q in November 2007 that he was in the process of purchasing land in Mexico. He was considering opening a yoga retreat there.
