Gregg Williams Biography

Gregg Williams is a former American football coach who has worked in the National Football League (NFL) for several teams. He was previously head coach of the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League, and also defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints with whom he also won Super Bowl XLIV. He was also acting as an intern head coach in the 2018 season.

Williams played football in high school and college, starting at linebacker for Truman State University. After graduating, he worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Houston before getting his first coaching job as a defensive coordinator at Excelsior Springs High School in Missouri.

Williams began his coaching career in 1984 as a graduate assistant at the University of Houston. He went on to coach at several other universities, including Southern Illinois University, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Houston again.

In 1990, Williams joined the NFL as a defensive quality control coach for the Houston Oilers. He later worked for the Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, St. Louis Rams, Cleveland Browns, and New York Jets.

Williams received a suspension in 2012 for his involvement in the “Bountygate” scandal, which revealed that the Saints had been paying bonuses to players who caused injuries to opposing teams.

Williams retired from coaching in January 2021, after spending one season as the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets.

Gregg served as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns from 2017 to 2018. During his tenure with the Browns, the team had a record of 5 wins, 27 losses, and 1 tie.

Williams was also briefly the interim head coach of the Browns during the 2018 season after the team fired head coach Hue Jackson. Under Williams’ leadership, the Browns went 5-3 for the remainder of the season. However, Williams was not retained as head coach after the season and was replaced by Freddie Kitchens.

Williams is a former defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins. He served in this role from 2004 to 2007 under head coach Joe Gibbs.

Williams is known for his aggressive defensive schemes, and during his time with the Redskins, he helped the team reach the playoffs twice.

In 2005, the Redskins defense ranked third in the NFL in fewest points allowed per game. Williams left the Redskins in 2008 to become the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
