Cecile Richards Biography

Cecile Richards led the Planned Parenthood Federation of America as its president from 2006 to 2018, and she is known for her work as a political activist and organizer.

She was elected to the Ford Foundation board of trustees in 2010. Cecile originally went to public school; but later in ninth grade, she was disciplined for protesting the Vietnam War after she then wore a black armband. Richards later joined the progressive St. Stephen’s Episcopal School for the remainder of high school.

She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History from Brown University (1980). After her graduation, Cecile became a labor organizer for service workers across several states, running union campaigns for garment workers, nursing home workers, and also janitors.

She moved back to Texas when she was 30 to help with her mother, Ann Richards’, campaign for Governor.

Her parents were immersed in political activism from her early years on. Cecile helped her mother at the age of 16 campaign for Sarah Waddington, the attorney who won Roe v. Wade, in her bid for the Texas state legislature.

Cecile is an American activist and leader in the reproductive health and rights movement. She served as the president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America from 2006 to 2018.

Prior to her work with Planned Parenthood, Richards founded the Texas Freedom Network, a grassroots organization dedicated to fighting for progressive values in the Lone Star State. She also served as the deputy chief of staff for Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives.

During her time at Planned Parenthood, Richards led the organization through a period of significant growth and political challenge, including efforts to defund the organization by Republican lawmakers in Congress. She also oversaw the implementation of the Affordable Care Act’s birth control benefit, which ensured that millions of women had access to no-cost contraception.

In addition to her work in reproductive health and rights, Richards is a vocal advocate for progressive causes, including LGBTQ+ rights and immigration reform. She is the author of the memoir “Make Trouble: Standing Up, Speaking Out, and Finding the Courage to Lead,” which was published in 2018.
