Prior to going on to play college soccer at Southern Connecticut State University, he was chosen as an All-American. Petke was selected Conference Rookie of the Year in 1995 and guided SCSU to the NCAA Division II National Championship. In the first round of the 1998 Major League Soccer College Draft, the MetroStars selected him. On April 17, 1998, in a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire, Petke made his MLS debut. The next five years of his career were spent at MetroStar, where he quickly established himself as the lone consistency among a staff of coaches and players that was always changing.

He finished his career with 169 games played (197 across all competitions), making him the MetroStars/Red Bulls all-time leader in games played. Petke was given the opportunity to sign a new deal with German club FC Kaiserslautern following his trial with Bayern, but he chose to stay with MetroStars.

Three-time MLS All-Star Eddie Pope, Jaime Moreno, and Richie Williams were dealt to D.C. United along with a draft pick. With DC during the 2004 campaign, Petke won the MLS Cup. He was subsequently dealt to Colorado Rapids in a three-team deal in May 2005. Petke also played a significant role in the Colorado backline’s stabilization in 2005 and helped the Rapids advance to the Western Conference Finals. For the following three years, Petke was a mainstay in the center of the Rapids defense.

On November 26, 2008, Petke was claimed off waivers by the New York Bulls, the former MetroStars, and a new multi-year contract was reached. Six years after leaving the MetroStars, Petke returned to New York as a result of this action. In his debut year with the Red Bulls, he participated in 19 regular-season games.
